The Growth of Data Driven Sports Storytelling Through Graphics

13 Nov 2024
Plenary
Many of the graphics on live sports broadcasts, as well as post-match analysis, are built around the near-real-time processing of a wide range of complex data. The data is captured directly from the field of play, and, for motorsports, via an assortment of cameras continually streaming performance and technical data from the vehicles in the race. Raw data is typically transferred to the cloud for processing at speeds unimaginable only a few years ago, providing highly detailed analysis of the action, providing true insight and dramatically enhancing fan engagement. AI/GenAI plays an increasing role in the analysis and implementation of this data, too, enabling it to be immediately set in context historically against massive data sets. This session discusses these developments in data-driven sports storytelling and provides some compelling examples of how sports data has been used in innovative ways over the last year.
